James Assignment Unit 20 Part 2
Gaming Platforms
There are 4 types of gaming platforms; PC, Mobile, Console and Arcade. Each platform has its benefits and its downsides.
PC's allow for better quality gaming |
A PC platform is a platform that can be modified, you can exchange its graphics cards, processors, RAM, etc. this means that the PC, if it has the optimum hardware requirements, can run any game at high frame rates with high graphic options. Also, PC is an open platform unlike consoles and arcade. this allows for the consumer to download more than just games. there is a variety of applications user can install such as games, communication apps and video software.
The drawbacks of a PC are that it is not portable. A PC tower is not portable as it too heavy and power is needed for it run. Also the amount of accessories that would be needed would be too much to carry as you would need a monitor, keyboard, mouse and maybe speakers/headphones. Also the cost a good PC build can be quite expensive, it can go over £2000, whereas consoles are only around £500 at the start and then usually drop to around £250 later on.
(1) Consoles are basic PC's as they have minimal options compared to PC's but are a cheaper alternative which can still run games in high quality and allow for communication with friends. But, consoles are more user friendly and easier to use for the basic player who just wants to load up a quick game to play. there would be no hardware updates or driver updates for console players and also they know that every game released for the console will work no problem where as with a PC there is a chance the computer would not run the game.
The disadvantages of console gaming is that it can not be upgraded. this means that when a new generation of gaming starts you would need to buy a whole new console instead of being able to just upgrade. this ,overtime, would mean that you spent more money on the consoles but it can be worth it if you're just a simple gamer. Another disadvantage is that it is not portable as it needs power and accessories for it to be used such as a controller and display.
Next is mobile gaming. Gaming on mobile is different from PC and consoles as mobiles are portable and cheaper but they usaully have worse quality games as the hardware of phones are not as good as say a £5000 gaming PC. But the benefits are that the portability means that the player can play the game anywhere as long as internet connection is not required. Also, mobile games usaully consist of mini games that you can play on and off in your spare time. As well as this, some games can only work on mobile phones due to its portability and use of camera and GPS. A game that uses this really well is Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go is an Augmented Reality game which uses the GPS and camera to allow players to explore the world and capture Pokemon in the real world. This would not be possible on consoles or PC's because their lack of portability and functions such as the camera that are needed. Also, mobiles have their own displays and built in functions which means the player doesnt have to go and buy extras such as a display and controller.
The downside of mobile gaming is that it can not run HD 60fps games sa the hardware inside a phone are not made for gaming specifically and also if the player wants a larger screen they can not get one with having to get a newer phone or using 3rd party applications.

Finally, arcade machines. Arcade machines are mainly for older games such as pacman and space invaders and you dont really see any arcade machines offering a 4k experience. This is becuase they are not designed for people to have the best quality gaming but they are there for people to enjoy with friends and have a local gaming session. Arcade amchines are not portable as they are huge machines and do not have built in sustainable power. Also, arcade machines only have one game which means it has less use as you can not swap out for other games when you get bored.
Overall, each platform has its own benefits and downsides that make them unique and its your own opinion on which is better or worth the money.
