Unit 78 : Research
File Extensions :
File extensions are what defines files from each other. It controls what programmes can open it and how it can be used. For example : a PNG file is an image file which can be open with programmes that allow you to view/edit images but it cannot be opened by document programmes such as word pad as it is the wrong format. For word pad you need a DOC file or any other type of text file and this could be opened in word pad, word, etc.
Also there are different types of the same file. For example, an image can be saved as a PNG, JPEG and GIF. The difference between them is the quality of the image and it can affect how they are edited too. The link below has all the information on the different image file extensions.
Compression :
compression is the process of changing the format of a file which results in lower storage usage. For example, JPG takes up more storage then PNG but JPG is a better quality then PNG. Although PNG seems to retain more colour depth.
Image Capture :
Image capture is the process of obtaining an image through things like a camera, a phone, a screenshot, etc. You can also capture an image by scanning in drawings/paintings.
Optimisation :
Optimisation is when a game is changed to work on the software it will go on. for example, a game would be built for a console so it would be optimised to have the best quality possible but still allow it to run smoothly.
Storage of Image Assets :
this is the storage of images and whether they are save in pixels or vectors.
